Planet Bath Fizzies (Bath Fizzies)

Liquids not for drinking

Materials

• 2 Plastic Cups
• Spoon
• Tablespoon
• Baking Soda
• Cornstarch
• Epsom Salts
• Citric Acid
• Mica Powder
• Coconut Oil
• Vial of Essential Oil
• Warm Water (not included)
• Bath Fizzy Mold

Procedure

  1. Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda, cornstarch, Epsom salts, and citric acid to one of the cups. Add the mica powder. Mix evenly with the spoon.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to the other cup. Add approximately 1/2 tablespoon of warm water and stir until evenly mixed. Add the vial of essential oil (optional). Note: If the coconut oil is too cold, warm the container with your hand so that it melts.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients in very small increments, stirring constantly so that they are evenly mixed (if all of the ingredients are added at once, your bath fizzy will fizz too early!).
  4. Coat one half of the mold with the mixture. Place the astronaut in the center. Fill the remainder of that half of the mold, and pack the mixture on top of the astronaut so that it is covered with space for the mold to close.
  5. Coat the other half of the mold with the mixture (there may be excess).
  6. Put the two halves of the mold together. Ensure that there is enough mixture so that the astronaut is completely enclosed.
  7. Let dry for at least 3 hours. When you are ready, submerge your bath fizzy in water to watch it fizz and release the astronaut! You can store your bath fizzy for several weeks before using it.

Science Behind it!

Braille is a system of reading and writing that uses raised dots. The Braille code used for writing regular text in books, magazines, school reports, and letters is

You have just created your very own bath fizzy in the form of a planet! First you made a chemical reaction when you mixed everything together, this is when you physically change something, like burning toast or cooking an egg. In this bath fizzy, you are combing citric acid and baking soda, which form a solid at first. When you set the bath fizzy in a liquid like water, the water reacts with the acid and baking soda, making a gas known as carbon dioxide. Think about when you do not feel well, you take an Alka Selzer, which dissolves in water and then you drink it. It makes you feel better because it creates gas in your stomach that comes out eventually. This is similar to our bath fizzy because the gas wants to go somewhere, it wants to go up and out! This is why the fizz happens! When the bath fizzy is dissolved in hot water, it speeds up the chemical reaction and the bath fizzy disappears quickly, leaving the bathroom and air around you smelling great!
Make sure you store your bath fizzy in a cool, dry place until you are ready to store. Just like the water makes it dissolve, the bath fizzy also absorbs the water and can make it not so bubbly and get old fast. Protect your bath fizzy and happy bathing!!!
