Science of Soap (DIY Soap)

Warning!
Adult supervision required. Follow approved procedures. Content can become very hot.

Materials

  • Soap Base
  • Mold
  • 1/2 tbsp.- Skin Friendly Oils (Optional)
  • Soap Colorant
  • Tongue Depressor

Procedure

  1. Coat the inside of the mold with Vaseline or coconut oil. Just enough to lightly cover the mold so that the soap doesn’t stick to the inside.
  2. Melt cube of the soap; you can always melt more. Place the cube in a microwaveable cup or bowl and set in the microwave for 30 seconds. Ask your child or student “What do they think might happen to the soap after it’s been in the microwave?” If some of the soap still remains, microwave in 10- second intervals until it is melted, but not boiling.
  3. Remove the melted soap from the microwave. This should only be done by an adult; the soap will be very HOT!
  4. Have your student/child add the recommended 10-15 drops of essential oils (more or less can be added). Add ½ tsp of the soap colorant to the soap mix. Mix with your tongue depressor.
  5. Let the soap cool and harden for about 2 hours. Once cool, turn the mold upside down and pop the soap out. Use hot water to clean the mold and reuse at a later time.
