Science of Brewing: Learn Sponsors

A few years ago, in 2012,
Oh WOW! wanted to raise some funds.
They had an idea that was swell,
In fact, it was second to none.

The Science of Brewing– fulfills a need,
An afterhours adult-only event–
Enhances our exhibit Drive to Succeed.
All the funds raised are money well spent!

With thousands of visitors every year,
They learn while they play–
Exploring around from far and near,
When they arrive, they want to stay!

Hurry hurry,
Don’t delay,
Our event is soon,
Only one week away.

OH WOW!’s mission is to foster independent thinking and enrich the lives of all children by creating a welcoming environment where they can develop learning skills and knowledge through the exploration of HANDS-ON exhibits and educational programs which are rooted in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

We appreciate the LEARN sponsors who support our mission.

Science of Brewing: Make! Sponsors

A few years ago, in 2012,
Oh WOW! wanted to raise some funds.
They had an idea that was swell,
In fact, it was second to none.

The Science of Brewing– attend if you’re able,
Our adult-only after hours event
Keeps water flowing at the tables.
All the funds raised are money well spent!

Our Inspire Works lab will be open to you
To plan and design your very own MAKE.
The sky is the limit to what you can do.
And at the end of the night, it’s yours to take.

Hurry hurry,
Don’t delay,
Our event is soon,
About two weeks away.

OH WOW! is happy to inspire our explorers in different areas of STEM, from marshmallow launching catapults, to weaving, to circuit blocks, and pendulum painting. Our entire area is stocked with supplies that will spark imaginations and teach our explorers the engineering process–

Plan: gathering different recycled materials and design the project
Do: Use the materials to make their project
Check: Testing the design for efficiency and usability
Act: Determine any modifications or corrections needed

We extend a sincere thank you to our Make! sponsors for your on-going support of our mission.

Science of Brewing Countdown: Mash Sponsors

A few years ago, in 2012,
Oh WOW! wanted to raise some cash.
They had an idea that was swell-
What is more fun than brewing, they asked?

The Science of Brewing: all the cool kids are going,
An afterhours adult-only event
That keeps our hurricane chamber blowing.
If you attended before, you’re happy you went!

But before you toast your mug of ale,
The beverage must start with a potion of mash.
Which is where our brewers set sail.
Tickets are going, don’t walk, but dash!

Hurry hurry,
Don’t delay,
Our event is soon,
About three weeks away.

As we prepare for of our 6th Annual Science of Brewing fundraising event, we want to begin by thanking our generous mash sponsors, Inspired Catering by Kravitz, V2, Vintage Estates, Christopher’s at the End of the TunnelDavid & Judith Jones and Jet Creative.

But what exactly is mash and how is it a part of our bash?

Mash is the term used to describe the early brewing process, where hot water is steeped to hydrate the barley, activate the malt enzymes, and convert the grain starches into fermentable sugars. Temperature and technique is the crucial start of the process, much like our sponsors.

The type of brew will depend on the mash technique used, and our different brewers will be on-hand at our adult-only event on August 11, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 PM to answer any questions you have about their technique. You don’t want to miss the fantastic event!

Tickets & sponsorships are still available — Call 330-744-5914 today for more information!

Science of Brewing Countdown: Crush Sponsor

A few years ago, in 2012,
Oh WOW! wanted to raise some cash.
They had an idea that was swell-
What is more fun than brewing, they asked?

Thus was born the Science of Brewing,
An afterhours adult-only event
That keeps Millie the Cow mooing.
If you attended before, you’re happy you went!

But before you toast your mug of ale,
The hops and malt first are crushed.
Which is when our brewers begin their trail.
The chance to learn more is a must.

Hurry hurry,
Don’t delay,
Our event is soon,
About four weeks away.

As we prepare for of our 6th Annual Science of Brewing fundraising event, we want to begin by thanking our generous crush sponsor, Ideal Image.

The type of brew will depend on the how finely the whole hops and malt are crushed. Crush is similar to the way coffee beans are ground, from coarse to fine, and the type of crush will determine the flavor of the finished product. For example, a more fine crush will make the mash more efficient, but it also produces excess tannins. Therefore, the level of crush is a delicate balance.

Ideally, the husk is removed from the grain, so that only the center part of the kernel is crushed. In mass commercial breweries, up to 25% of the husk is left intact, and ground finely, which accounts for the flavor difference from microbreweries.

Stay tuned next week when we learn more about the “Mash” part of brewing and thank our Mash level sponsors.

Our brewers will be on-hand at our adult-only event on August 11, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 PM to answer any questions you have about their techniques.

Tickets & sponsorships are still available — Call 330-744-5914 today for more information!

OH WOW! fundraising event

Best destination in Youngstown

From Sea to Shining Sea
When out of town family visits Youngstown, the best place to bring them is OH WOW! Children’s Center for Science & Technology. This past week, we had explorers from around the United States, including:

Arizona
California
Florida
Georgia
Indiana
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
Tennessee
Texas
Virginia
Wisconsin

OH WOW! is entertaining for all ages, from our littlest explorers to grandparents. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon, or even plan a family reunion in Youngstown. We have party rooms for 50 or 100 people, after-hours rentals, and all parties include admission to the museum. No need to wrack your brains coming up with something to do to entertain everyone, bring them here and we’ll do the EDUtaining for you. (shhh– they may also learn a thing as well!)

Trip Advisor agrees, as a recent reviewer wrote:

One of the best Children’s Museums
Every city we visit, we find a children’s museum. We have a 5,3 and 1 year old. We have been to dozens of children’s museums and this is in our top 3. There is something for everyone, even the adults had fun. We went with a large group, 7 adults and 7 children. The staff was very friendly and the cost is very conservative. We were there for 2.5 hours and it was not enough time. Can’t wait to go back!

We offer annual grandparent (and you can also be a favorite aunt, uncle, or adult) memberships for $20 where you can also purchase another 5 one-time use passes for an additional $20. This great opportunity is underwritten in part by our friends at Briarfield.
